British Angler FAQ
What is a Gar Pike and how big do they get in Texas?
The Gar Pike — known in America as the alligator gar — is the largest freshwater fish in the USA. It reaches 8+ feet and 300+ pounds, has lived on Earth for 157 million years and is the fish Jeremy Wade called one of the last true river monsters on earth. On the Trinity River in East Texas, fish regularly exceed 100 lbs and top 200 lbs every season.
Did Jeremy Wade really film with Garzilla on River Monsters?
Yes — Jeremy Wade chose Garzilla Guide Service for his River Monsters investigation of the alligator gar legend on the Trinity River. The episode aired in over 100 countries on BBC and Animal Planet. Jeremy is British, and his connection to Garzilla is why thousands of British anglers now book their gar pike fishing holiday to East Texas.
Do I need a visa for a fishing holiday to Texas from the UK?
No visa required. UK citizens enter the USA under the Visa Waiver Programme (ESTA). Apply online at esta.cbp.dhs.gov — takes about 10 minutes and costs $21. You will also need a Texas freshwater fishing licence from tpwd.texas.gov — approximately $16 for a 5-day non-resident licence.
Which airport should I fly into from the UK for gar pike fishing?
Houston Intercontinental (IAH) is the most convenient — British Airways and United fly direct from Heathrow, and IAH is approximately 90 minutes from our Huntsville launch area. Dallas Fort Worth (DFW) also has direct Heathrow flights and is 2 hours from our launch points. We arrange airport pickup from both on VIP packages.

Book 6–12 months in advance for summer dates (June and July are peak).
Is all fishing tackle provided or should I bring my own gear?
Everything is provided. Rods, reels, terminal tackle, live bait, ice — all included. There is absolutely no need to fly with fishing equipment. Bring polarised sunglasses, a hat, sunscreen and your camera. Travelling light is strongly recommended for a long-haul fishing holiday.
